Chapter 3

France’s POV

~~~~~~~~~~~
I brushed out any possible wrinkles on my clothes then adjusted my shirt. I sat down on my bed to slip on my boots. My heart was pounding in my chest, why was I so nervous? Were we even considered friends yet? Or just co-workers? I let out a sigh and stood up. I took in a deep breath before leaving my room.
I kept my pace slow so I didn’t seem like I was rushing off to meet her. My heart’s beating quickened as I grew closer to her room. I did my best to ignore it, thinking it would slow back down if I did. A guard walked by, holding a pair of scissors in one hand and a comb in the other. I shrugged my shoulders, thinking it was just an annual for one of the guards.
My heart stopped when I reached her door. I brought my hand up and knocked. Within a few seconds the door opened. My mouth fell open from the sight before me.
“You cut your hair!” I exclaimed.
Jeanne nodded, running her hand through her now short hair. It was a tad shorter than mine, just hitting under her jaw line.
“You like it? I thought it would be easier to take care of when I go to war.” she asked, doing a small twirl so I could see it at all angles.
Her new hair did seem to suit her more but it was strange seeing a girl with shorter hair than a guy. Then again my hair was longer than most men.
I smiled and nodded “I do. It suits you.”
Jeanne smiled then stepped out, closing the door behind her. I extended my arm out.
“Ready mademoiselle?”
“Oui! Let’s go.”
~~~~~~~~~~

I led her to one of the few fields that haven’t been touched by war. Luckily it was within walking distance so we didn’t have to borrow one of the horses to ride here. Jeanne picked a random spot and sat down. She smiled to herself, enjoying the warmth the sun was giving off. The sunshine made her hair look brighter than usual. Everything about her was enhanced and even more beautiful.

Her looks could make the prettiest rose thrive to look better. I could watch her all day if it wasn’t considered weird or creepy.

“Care to sit next to me?” she asked, snapping me back to reality.

“I’d love too.” I smiled then sat next to her.

Everything around was silent, including us. I couldn’t help but wonder what she was thinking. Did she truly want to be here or did she only come because of who I was? Jeanne leaned back, propping herself up on her elbows.

“What is it like to be France?” she asked, breaking the silence.

“It has its ups and downs. Staying young forever is nice but seeing so much death is awful…” I told her honestly.

Jeanne frowned slightly “So you’ve probably seen someone that you loved die?”

I shook my head “No, I haven’t been in love before.”

“Never?” she asked in disbelief.

“Never ever. I’ve had a few crushes but that’s it. I’m not that interested in the other countries.” I said, running my hand through my hair.

“What about humans? Have you ever liked one of them?”

Her question made my heart feel like it was about to burst. I shook my head again “Nope. The only human I really talk to is my King. Sometimes the soldiers but that’s just to discuss battle tactics.”

Jeanne slightly nodded; she seemed to be stuck in thought. I felt another awkward silence growing. She laid back and looked up at the clouds. She tugged on my sleeve, signaling me to lie down. I obeyed her request and lay down with her. She pointed up at the sky.

“Look, that cloud looks like a flower.” she said happily.

My eyes followed up to where she was pointing. The cloud she was pointing at looked nothing like a flower, just a big white puff. “I don’t see a flower.”

“Use your imagination. Don’t you see the petals?” she asked, using her finger to outline the shape of the cloud.

I squinted slightly, kind of seeing the flower “Now I sort of see it.”

“God is showing us his works of art.” Jeanne said softly.

‘You’re still his best work.’ I thought, too scared to say the words out loud.

Jeanne scooted closer to me. My breathing stopped from her action. She continued to point out the different things she saw in the clouds. I told her I saw them too even though most of the time I didn’t. Sadly the sun was starting to set, way too soon for my liking. I wanted this day to go on forever.

I led her back to the castle. We walked through the hallways, filling them with our stories and laughter.

“So England wanted hair like yours? That’s so funny!” Jeanne laughed.

I couldn’t help but laugh with her. “Oui! I don’t blame him though. Who wouldn’t want hair like mine?” I said, purposely being cocky.

“Oh I know. It’s just so beautiful.” she giggled, twirling a lock of my hair with her finger.

We stopped walking when we reached her door. Our laughter also stopped. Jeanne fiddled with the hem of her shirt.

“What happened? You and England seemed to get long okay.” she shyly asked.

“I don’t know exactly. But I do know that sometimes our bosses make us do things we don’t want to do. That could have been what happened with England.” I tried to explain.

Jeanne nodded “Thanks for being with me today. I had a lot of fun. Same thing tomorrow?” she asked, thankfully dropping the subject.

“Of course.” I smiled.

“Great, maybe tomorrow you won’t lie about seeing the shapes in the sky.” she smirked “A bientot, Francis.”

I was too stunned to answer; all I could do was wave my goodbye. Jeanne laughed then opened the door and went inside.

“This girl is truly amazing.” I thought out loud as I walked away.
Sorry that it took me so long to post. I had writer's block. I know it's a little shorter than usual but the next chapter will be long. Dont worry
